Composition

Methylergometrine (0.125 Mg)

Methergin tablet is used to stop bleeding after childbirth. It quickly enters the body after use, making it essential to control uterine bleeding after childbirth.

Methylergometrine is the primary ingredient in Methergin tablet. This tablet contains 0.125 mg of methylergometrine. It is a semi-synthetic ergot alkaloid. All the ergot alkaloids including methylergometrine show motor activity on the uterus.

After small doses contractions are increased in frequency, force, which is followed by relaxation. But as the dose increases the contractions of uterus muscle are sustained for longer time and desired contracture is achieved.

It is also used for subinvolution of the uterus and haemorrhage. Use of Methergin tablet is not indicated during pregnancy.

Management of placenta after delivery of child: The methergin tablet increases muscle stiffness and the speed and strength of contractions, which helps remove the placenta after the delivery.
Managing postpartum atony (it is a condition characterised by a soft and weak uterus): Methergin tablet works by increasing the contractions of muscles and changing muscle stiffness. It also reduces blood loss and shortens the labour period.
Postpartum haemorrhage ( bleeding after childbirth): The contractions in the uterus muscle and any muscle changes concerning strength and tone help reduce postpartum (after childbirth) bleeding. Methergin tablet is indicated for usually one week by oral route.
Subinvolution (Its a condition characterised by no decrease in uterus size after pregnancy): Contractions of the uterus muscle accompanied by changes in the tone of the muscle help in subinvolution.

Directions for Use of Methergin Tablet 10

Follow your pharmacist or doctor’s directions for using Methergin tablet. Below are the general instructions for reference.

Take the tablet with a glass of water.
Swallow the tablet as a whole, do not crush or chew it.
This medication can be taken with or without, but it is advisable to take it at a fixed time.

Methergin tablet can be taken orally.

Hypertension associated with seizure and headache - High blood pressure and seizures is common side effects of Methergrin tablet. The seizures are due to the inability of small blood vessels to deliver oxygen-rich blood to the body’s organs.
Nausea: A feeling of vomiting, but no actual vomiting characterises nausea. It’s a common side effect which goes away with time.
Vomiting: Removal of stomach contents via mouth characterises vomiting. It is a common side effect which goes away with time.

Managing the Side Effects:

Hypertension associated with seizure and headache- ensure that blood pressure is in control which may help by not worsening the symptoms like seizure or headache.
Nausea - smell a lemon with rind, drink a glass of lemon water and have some fresh air. These will relieve the symptoms of nausea.
Vomiting: Drink ORS solution as it will help to restore the lost body elements and minerals; avoid greasy, fried foods. This will stop the trigger to further vomiting.

Medicine activity of Methergin tablet is by directly acting on the uterus muscles and increasing the rhythmic contractions of uterus muscles with altered or change in speed and strength of muscle. Which results in long-duration contractions, this will help shorten labour duration and reduces blood loss.

Pregnancy

Methergin tablet is not recommended for use during pregnancy. Consult your doctor for advice.

Breastfeeding

Methergin tablet passes into the breast milk. It is not recommended during breastfeeding. Consult your doctor for any concerns.

Alcohol
