Vortioxetine

Uses of Vortioxetine

  • Vortioxetine is primarily used to manage major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults and belongs to the group of antidepressant medications called serotonin modulators and stimulators (SMS).

Side effects of Vortioxetine

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Constipation

  • Abdominal pain

  • Dizziness

  • Fatigue and drowsiness

How Vortioxetine works

  • Vortioxetine is a serotonin modulator and stimulator.

  • It starts its work by inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin, which leads to an increase in serotonin levels in the brain. It binds to 5-HT1A receptors and activates them, thus enhancing serotonergic transmission. This medicine also partially activates 5-HT1B receptors to control the release of serotonin. Vortioxetine is an antagonist at 5-HT3, 5-HT1D, and 5-HT7 receptors. By acting on serotonin and other neurotransmitters like norepinephrine, dopamine, histamine, and acetylcholine, Vortioxetine brings about its antidepressant effects.

Frequently asked questions

No, Vortioxetine is not the same as SSRIs (serotonin reuptake inhibitors) or SNRIs (serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors). It belongs to a unique class of medications known as serotonin modulators and stimulators (SMS). While both of these classes of medications work to manage major depressive disorder, Vortioxetine has a unique method of action.

Yes, Vortioxetine may have a positive impact on cognitive functions such as thinking, remembering, and problem-solving. This is due to its unique action on various neurotransmitters in the brain, including serotonin.

Vortioxetine is not known to cause dependency or addiction. However, it should be taken exactly as prescribed by your doctor and should not be stopped abruptly without medical advice due to the risk of withdrawal symptoms.

While medications like Vortioxetine can be very effective for managing major depressive disorder, they are typically used in conjunction with other treatments such as psychotherapy or counselling. Lifestyle changes, such as regular physical activity and a healthy diet, can also support overall mental health.

The duration of therapy with Vortioxetine varies from person to person depending on their response and the severity of their symptoms. It is typically used long-term to maintain control of symptoms.

Allergy to one medication does not necessarily mean you will be allergic to others. However, if you have had allergic reactions to medicines in the past, make sure to inform your doctor. They can decide whether Vortioxetine is the right medicine for you.

While Vortioxetine does not usually interact with food, it is recommended to limit alcohol intake as it may exacerbate certain side effects like nausea and dizziness.
