Dosage Forms Available

• Vigabatrin is available for use through the oral route in the form of tablets.

• It is also available as a powder for oral solution, which is mixed with water before administration.

Age and Dose Restrictions

• This medicine is intended for use in both adults and children. For infants aged 1 month to 2 years, Vigabatrin is used to manage infantile spasms (West syndrome). It is also used for managing refractory complex partial seizures in adults and children aged 2 to 16 years.

Contraindications

• Vigabatrin is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to Vigabatrin or any of its components.

• It is also contraindicated in patients with pre-existing severe vision loss or visual field defects.

Other Medications to Avoid

• Vigabatrin may interact with other anti-epileptic medications (such as carbamazepine, phenytoin, and valproate), and antidepressants (like amitriptyline and sertraline).

Overdose and Missed Dose

• An overdose of Vigabatrin may cause symptoms such as confusion, drowsiness, lethargy, increased seizures, and even loss of consciousness. In such cases, immediate medical attention should be sought.

• If you forget to take a dose of Vigabatrin, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule.

Management of Side Effects

Most side effects are temporary and generally harmless and resolve when discontinuing this medicine. However, if you experience any severe side effects or worsening of any of the symptoms, please consult your doctor.

• To manage dizziness and drowsiness, avoid sudden changes in position, and get up slowly from a lying or sitting position.

• To manage nausea, try taking Vigabatrin with food.

• Avoid caffeine, as it may increase the side effects of Vigabatrin.

Use in Driving and Operating Machinery

• Vigabatrin may cause drowsiness and dizziness which can affect your ability to drive or operate heavy machinery. It is advised to avoid driving or working with heavy machinery until you know how this medication affects you.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation

• It is recommended to consult your doctor before using Vigabatrin during pregnancy and breastfeeding. The use of this medicine during these periods should be only when needed.

• Patients with a history of depression or kidney impairment should exercise caution when taking Vigabatrin.
