Venlafaxine

Uses of Venlafaxine

  • Primarily, Venlafaxine is used for the management of major depressive disorder (MDD), generalised anxiety disorder (GAD), social anxiety disorder (SAD), and panic disorder. It is part of the serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) class of medications.

  • In some cases, Venlafaxine might also be prescribed for managing diabetic neuropathy, menopausal hot flashes and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

  • Dry mouth

  • Insomnia

How Venlafaxine works

  • Venlafaxine is a serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI).

  • It works by increasing the levels of serotonin and norepinephrine in the brain. Serotonin and norepinephrine are neurotransmitters, which are chemicals that transmit signals between nerve cells. Venlafaxine inhibits or prevents these neurotransmitters from being reabsorbed back into the nerve cells in the brain. This leaves more of these chemicals available in the brain, helping to improve mood and reduce feelings of depression and anxiety.
