Thalidomide

Uses of Thalidomide

  • The primary role of Thalidomide is in the management of multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer. It belongs to the category of immunomodulatory agents.

  • Secondary applications of Thalidomide include managing erythema nodosum leprosum (ENL), a painful skin complication associated with leprosy. Additionally, it may also be recommended in the management of other inflammatory conditions and cancers.

Side effects of Thalidomide

  • Drowsiness

  • Fatigue

  • Constipation

  • Skin rash and dryness

How Thalidomide works

  • Thalidomide is an immunomodulatory agent.

  • It works by enhancing the activity of immune cells such as T cells and natural killer cells, which play a crucial role in fighting unwanted cells in the body. Thalidomide also inhibits the production of certain substances called inflammatory cytokines, which are usually involved in causing inflammation and pain. Importantly, it prevents the growth of new blood vessels that supply nutrients to cancerous tumours, thereby slowing down their growth. Lastly, it induces apoptosis, which is the programmed death of cancer cells. This helps to reduce the number of harmful cells in the body.
