Teicoplanin is a glycopeptide antibiotic.
It acts by targeting the cell walls of bacteria. First, it attaches to the building blocks (peptidoglycan precursors) of the bacterial cell wall, stopping them from being incorporated into the wall. Additionally, it forms a complex with some of these building blocks, leading to a halt of the steps involved in the assembly (transglycosylation and transpeptidation) of the bacterial cell wall.

Teicoplanin is available as a powder for solution (injection or infusion) and intravenous bags.
Teicoplanin is generally indicated for use in adults.
Teicoplanin is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to it or other glycopeptide antibiotics.
It is also contraindicated in patients who develop thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, or agranulocytosis with prior therapy involving Teicoplanin.
Teicoplanin may interact with aminoglycosides (such as gentamicin, streptomycin), polyenes (such as amphotericin B), immunosuppressants (such as cyclosporine), loop diuretics (like furosemide, bumetanide), and antineoplastics (such as cisplatin).
An overdose of Teicoplanin could potentially lead to serious health complications such as kidney damage. If you suspect an overdose, immediately contact your doctor or seek emergency medical attention.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dose schedule. Do not double your dose to make up for the missed one.
Most side effects are temporary and generally harmless, and resolve when discontinuing this medicine. However, if you experience any severe side effects or worsening of any of the symptoms, please consult your doctor.
If you experience local injection site reactions, try applying a cold compress to the site.
If you are experiencing a fever, ensure you stay hydrated and rest until the fever subsides.
Teicoplanin does not typically affect your ability to drive or operate heavy machinery. However, always listen to your body and refrain from these activities if you experience any side effects that may impair your ability to do so safely.
The use of Teicoplanin during pregnancy or while breastfeeding should only be considered if the benefit outweighs the risk, as decided by your consulting doctor.
Teicoplanin should be used with caution in patients with renal impairment due to its primarily renal elimination.
Doses must be adjusted based on creatinine clearance in such patients.
Always maintain good hygiene to prevent further infection or spread of infection while you are on this medication.
Stay hydrated to help flush out toxins from your body and support kidney function.
Rest adequately to allow your body to recover from the infection.
