Sodium Citrate

Uses of Sodium Citrate

  • Sodium Citrate is primarily used for the prevention and treatment of kidney stones and belongs to the group of medicines known as urinary alkalinizers.

  • It is also used for managing gout, treating certain metabolic problems such as acidosis that can occur due to kidney disease or renal tubular acidosis, and providing relief from acid reflux and heartburn as it acts as an effective antacid.

Side effects of Sodium Citrate

  • Nausea

  • Vomiting

  • Stomach upset

  • Diarrhoea

  • Swelling of the hands, ankles, or feet

How Sodium Citrate works

  • Sodium Citrate is a urinary alkalinizer.

  • It works by increasing the pH of urine, making it less acidic, which can help prevent the formation of kidney stones and improve the solubility of certain medicines. Additionally, it is often used as an anticoagulant in blood collection and storage, as it binds to calcium ions and prevents clotting.
