How Rofecoxib works

It works by selectively blocking the activity of an enzyme known as cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2). This enzyme is responsible for producing chemicals called prostaglandins in the body, which cause inflammation, pain, and fever. By inhibiting COX-2, Rofecoxib reduces the production of these prostaglandins, thereby managing inflammation and pain. Importantly, it does not significantly affect another enzyme, COX-1, which is necessary for protecting our stomach lining. This selectiveness results in fewer stomach-related side effects in comparison to non-selective NSAIDs.
