How Oxymetazoline works

Oxymetazoline falls under the direct-acting alpha-adrenergic agonist nasal decongestant category. It binds to alpha1- and alpha2-adrenoceptors, which are Gq-protein-coupled receptors that stimulate vascular smooth muscle contraction by constricting the tiny blood arteries on the inside surface of the nose. This temporarily relieves nasal congestion and stuffiness.

Expert Advice

Doctors recommend Oxymetazoline to relieve nasal congestion. Oxymetazoline starts to work instantaneously, and a single dosage may provide relief that lasts for up to 12 hours. How to properly use the nasal spray: Before using the Oxymetazoline medication, shake the bottle. Before taking Oxymetazoline, make sure your nose is clean. Place the tip of the Oxymetazoline bottle into one of your nostrils while closing the other nose. Keep the spray away from the cartilage that separates the two sides of your nose instead and directs it toward the sides of your nostrils. Repeat this procedure with the other nostril, inhaling slowly through your mouth each time. Avoid taking deep breaths because this may cause the Oxymetazoline to go back up into your throat, reducing its effectiveness. Do not share the Oxymetazoline bottle to prevent the spreading of germs. If you use Oxymetazoline for more than three or four days in a row, you may experience an increase in the severity of your nasal congestion (called rebound congestion).
