  • Constipation

How Mirtazepine works

  • Mirtazapine is categorised as an atypical antidepressant, specifically a tetracyclic antidepressant.
  • This medicine works by enhancing the activity of certain natural substances in the brain. It does this by blocking presynaptic alpha-2 adrenergic receptors in the brain, which increases the release of serotonin and norepinephrine, two neurotransmitters that help maintain emotional balance. Moreover, Mirtazapine moderately blocks α1-adrenergic receptors outside the brain and muscarinic receptors. These actions may cause occasional low blood pressure upon standing and infrequent anticholinergic side effects (like dry mouth and blurry vision), respectively.
