Dosage Forms Available

• Mefenamic Acid can be taken orally (tablet, capsule and suspension).

Age And Dose Restrictions 

• Mefenamic Acid tablets and capsules are intended to be used by adults. While, its suspension can be used in children above 6 months of age. 

Contraindications 

• This medicine is contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to Mefenamic Acid, patients with pre-existing asthma, aspirin-sensitive asthma, and before coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. 

Other Medications To Avoid With This Medicine

• Avoid taking antacids, antiarrhythmics (digoxin), diuretics (furosemide), anticoagulants (warfarin), immunosuppressive medications (methotrexate), antihypertensives (atenolol), anti-cancer medications (pemetrexed), other NSAIDs (aspirin). These medications may alter the safety and effectiveness of this medicine.

Overdose And Missed Dose

• Overdose can cause lethargy, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. These symptoms need to be managed as an emergency in a hospital setting. Therefore, strict adherence to the prescribed dose is essential.
• If you miss a dose of this medicine, take it as soon as you remember. But, if the next dose is near, skip the missed dose and resume the regular dosing regime.

Management Of Side Effects

• Take this medicine with food to reduce gastrointestinal side effects and continue taking it as prescribed. If side effects worsen or persist, consult your doctor for a possible treatment plan adjustment.

Use In Driving And Operating Machinery

• This medicine can cause dizziness and drowsiness. It is not recommended to drive, operate machinery, or do other activities that require mental alertness or coordination after taking this medicine. 

Use In Pregnancy And Lactation

• This medicine is not recommended during the third trimester of pregnancy. Caution is advised during 1st and 2nd trimester of pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Caution In Other Conditions

• Caution is advised in older adults and patients with heart conditions, hypertension, congestive heart failure and odema, active ulceration/bleeding, inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract & kidney and liver impairment.

Special Dietary And Lifestyle Recommendation

• Avoid alcohol consumption, as it may increase the risk of liver toxicity and adverse side effects.
• Take Mefenamic Acid only for the prescribed duration.
• Smoking can potentially increase the risk of stomach ulcers or bleeding. Quitting or reducing smoking can be beneficial.
• Maintain a healthy weight. Excess weight can contribute to joint pain and inflammation, so maintaining a healthy weight can reduce these issues.
