Loratadine is primarily used to manage symptoms of allergic conditions such as hay fever (allergic rhinitis) and hives (urticaria). It belongs to the class of medicines known as antihistamines.
In addition to this, this medicine can be used to relieve symptoms associated with other upper respiratory allergies. These symptoms include sneezing, runny nose, itchy or watery eyes, and itching of the nose or throat. It is also used to manage itching and redness caused by chronic idiopathic urticaria.

Loratadine is a long-acting antihistamine.
It works by selectively blocking the binding of histamine to H1 receptors. Histamine is a chemical that the body releases during allergic reactions, causing symptoms like itching, sneezing, and watering of the eyes.
By inhibiting the binding of histamine to its receptors, Loratadine ensures that these allergy symptoms are reduced or do not manifest at all. This does not prevent the actual release of histamine from cells but reduces its effects on the body.
