Uses of Lithium

  • The primary use of Lithium is in managing bipolar disorder. It is a key medication used to stabilise mood, reducing the severity and frequency of mania episodes and helping to prevent or lessen the intensity of depressive episodes. It is a psychiatric medication.

  • Lithium may also be used as an adjunct to antidepressants for treatment-resistant depression. In some cases, it may be used off-label for managing other psychiatric conditions such as schizoaffective disorder, aggressive behaviour, and cluster headaches.

  • If you miss a dose of Lithium, take it as soon as you remember unless it's close to the time of your next scheduled dose. In the latter case, skip the missed dose and continue your regular schedule. Do not double up on doses to compensate for the missed one.
