Ilaprazole is a Proton Pump Inhibitor (PPI).
It works by irreversibly blocking an enzyme system known as the Hydrogen/Potassium Adenosine Triphosphatase (H+/K+ ATPase or simply, 'proton pump') located on the gastric parietal cells in the stomach. This enzyme is responsible for the final step in stomach acid production. By inhibiting this enzyme, Ilaprazole effectively reduces the concentration of hydrogen ions in the stomach, thereby increasing its pH level and making it less acidic.
