The primary use of Flutamide is for the management of metastatic prostate cancer. It belongs to the group of nonsteroidal antiandrogen medicines.
In combination with a luteinising hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) agonist or surgical castration, it is often used for maximum androgen blockade.

Flutamide is categorised as a nonsteroidal antiandrogen.
It works by competitively inhibiting the action of androgens (such as testosterone) at the androgen receptor sites on prostate cancer cells. By blocking these receptors, Flutamide prevents androgens from stimulating the growth of cancer cells, thereby reducing the proliferation of prostate tissue and slowing down the progression of prostate cancer.

This medicine is contraindicated in patients with severe liver impairment or known hypersensitivity to Flutamide or any of its components.

Flutamide can interact with blood thinners (such as warfarin), leading to an increased risk of bleeding. It may also interact with medications affecting liver enzymes (such as rifampin, phenytoin), as these can alter the metabolism of Flutamide. Additionally, interactions with medications that impact liver function (such as acetaminophen) and other anti-androgens (such as bicalutamide) are possible.
An overdose of Flutamide may lead to serious liver toxicity, marked by symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and jaundice. Immediate medical attention is advised if an overdose is suspected.
If you miss a dose of Flutamide, take it as soon as you remember. If it is nearly time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
