Fenofibrate is an antilipemic agent (a lipid-regulating medicine) used to manage abnormal levels of fats in the blood.
It is also used to reduce high levels of triglycerides in adults as an addition to diet control. This can help decrease the risk of pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas).

How Fenofibrate works
Fenofibrate is an antilipemic agent medication that helps control fat levels in the blood.
It operates by turning on a body's "switch" called peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPAR-α), which manages the functioning of certain genes associated with fat metabolism. This action enhances the breakdown and elimination of fat-rich particles from your blood.
In addition, Fenofibrate aids in reducing the number of harmful very low-density lipoproteins (VLDL) and low-density lipoproteins (LDL), also termed "bad" cholesterol.
It promotes an increase in beneficial high-density lipoproteins (HDL) or "good" cholesterol and also reduces the production of apolipoprotein C-III, which hampers the activity of a fat-decomposing enzyme called lipoprotein lipase.

Contraindications
Do not use this medicine if you have an allergy to Fenofibrate or any of its components, serious kidney problems, liver problems, including a condition called primary biliary cirrhosis, ongoing unexplained abnormal liver function, or existing gallbladder disease.
Other Medications to Avoid
This medication can interact with coumarin anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin, dicumarol), immunosuppressants (e.g., cyclosporine, tacrolimus), bile acid-binding resins (e.g., colestipol, cholestyramine), and statins (e.g., atorvastatin, simvastatin).
Overdose and Missed Dose
If you accidentally take too much Fenofibrate, you may experience symptoms such as muscle pain and tenderness, fatigue, fever, and dark urine. If this happens, consult your doctor immediately.
If you forget to take a dose of Fenofibrate, take it as soon as you remember. But if it's nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
Management of Side Effects
Most side effects are temporary and generally harmless and resolve after discontinuing this medicine. However, if you experience any severe side effects or worsening of any of the symptoms, please consult your doctor.
Sipping water frequently may help in managing side effects like dry mouth or throat.
Taking Fenofibrate with meals may help in reducing gastrointestinal side effects like nausea, abdominal pain or diarrhoea.
