Ezetimibe

Uses of Ezetimibe

  • The primary use of Ezetimibe is to manage high cholesterol levels in the blood. It belongs to the group of medications known as cholesterol absorption inhibitors.

  • It also assists in the management of primary hypercholesterolemia (high cholesterol), mixed hyperlipidemia (high levels of different types of fats in the blood), homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (a severe genetic form of high cholesterol), and homozygous sitosterolemia (a rare genetic condition characterised by high levels of certain plant sterols in the blood).

Side effects of Ezetimibe

  • Upper respiratory infections like sinus infections and sore throat

  • Diarrhoea

  • Joint pain

  • Pain in the arms or legs

How Ezetimibe works

  • Ezetimibe is a cholesterol absorption inhibitor.

  • It works by reducing the amount of cholesterol absorbed from your intestines into your bloodstream. This reduction is due to Ezetimibe's ability to block a specific transport protein called Niemann-Pick C1-Like 1 protein, which moves cholesterol from the intestines into the bloodstream. By decreasing intestinal absorption, less cholesterol reaches your liver and the levels in the blood drop. Ezetimibe does not have significant effects on the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins, triglycerides, or bile acids.
