Etoposide is a chemotherapy medication.
It works by forming a complex with a molecule in the body's cells called DNA and an enzyme known as topoisomerase II. This interaction leads to breaks in the DNA strands and stops them from resealing critical processes for cell division. By preventing these processes, Etoposide inhibits the division and growth of cancer cells, leading to their death, a process called apoptosis. Since cancer cells divide faster than normal cells, Etoposide targets these cells more preferentially, helping to slow down or stop the growth of certain types of cancer.
