Age and Dose Restrictions

• Eltrombopag is meant for adults and children aged 1 year and above.

Contraindications

• Eltrombopag is contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to Eltrombopag or any of its components.

• It should not be used in patients who currently have a blood clot or have a history of blood clots.

Other Medications to Avoid

• Eltrombopag may interact with medicines that contain polyvalent cations, such as calcium, iron, magnesium, selenium, and zinc (found in antacids, mineral supplements, and dairy products).

• Eltrombopag can also interact with inhibitors of OATP1B1 and BCRP (rifampin and cyclosporine), leading to increased plasma concentrations of Eltrombopag.

Overdose and Missed Dose

• In case of an overdose of Eltrombopag, symptoms such as severe thrombocytosis (excessively high platelet count), increased risk of blood clots, and liver injury may occur. Clinical management includes discontinuation of medication and supportive care as required.

• If you miss your dose of Eltrombopag, take it as soon as you remember it. However, if it is close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take two doses at once to make up for a missed dose.

Management of Side Effects

Most side effects are temporary and generally harmless, and resolve when discontinuing this medicine. However, if you experience any severe side effects or worsening of any of the symptoms, please consult your doctor.

• For common side effects like dry mouth, try drinking plenty of fluids or using a humidifier.

• For nausea, try eating smaller meals more frequently.

Use in Driving and Operating Machinery

• Eltrombopag may cause dizziness or blurred vision. If you experience either of these effects, refrain from driving or operating heavy machinery until you feel capable.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation

• Eltrombopag should only be used during pregnancy if clearly needed.

• Breastfeeding is not recommended during treatment with Eltrombopag as it may pass into breast milk. Always consult your doctor before using this medicine during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.

Caution in Other Conditions

• Eltrombopag should be used with caution in patients with existing liver disease, as it can cause elevated liver enzymes. Regular monitoring of liver function tests is advised while taking this medicine.

• Patients with a history of blood clots should exercise caution while taking Eltrombopag since it can increase the risk of thrombotic/thromboembolic complications.

Special Dietary and Lifestyle Recommendations

• It is advisable to refrain from consuming foods or products fortified with polyvalent cations such as calcium and iron around the time of taking Eltrombopag as this could reduce its absorption.

• Maintain a balanced diet and active lifestyle to support overall health and better manage the underlying condition for which Eltrombopag is being taken.

• Regular checks on liver function and eye examinations are recommended for those on long-term use of Eltrombopag.
