Contraindications

• Doxazosin can interact with antihypertensive agents (such as diuretics and beta-blockers), phosphodiesterase 5 inhibitors (such as sildenafil and tadalafil), antifungals (like ketoconazole) and antivirals (ritonavir).

Overdose and Missed Dose

• Overdose of Doxazosin may result in profound hypotension (very low blood pressure) which should be treated by placing the patient in a supine position (lying flat with face upward).

• If a dose of Doxazosin is missed, it should be taken as soon as it is remembered. However, if it's nearly time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with the regular schedule.

Management of Side Effects

Most side effects are temporary and generally harmless and resolve when discontinuing this medicine. However, if you experience any severe side effects or worsening of the symptoms, please consult your doctor.

• Drinking plenty of water can help manage minor side effects such as dry mouth or constipation.

• Standing up gradually can help manage dizziness or fainting, which may occur particularly when rising from a sitting or lying position.

• Doxazosin may cause dizziness or fainting, especially when you first start taking the medicine. Therefore, caution is advised when driving or operating heavy machinery.

• Use of Doxazosin during pregnancy and breastfeeding should only be considered if the potential benefit to the mother outweighs the possible risk to the fetus or child. Consult your doctor before using Doxazosin during these periods.

Caution in Other Conditions

• Patients with severe liver or kidney disease need to use Doxazosin with caution and under close medical supervision due to the increased risk of adverse effects.

• Caution is also advised in patients with a history of gastrointestinal disorders such as oesophageal reflux or peptic ulcer disease.

• Regular monitoring of blood pressure is recommended as Doxazosin is used in managing hypertension.

• A diet low in salt and saturated fats, along with regular exercise, can help manage high blood pressure effectively.

• Limiting caffeine and alcohol intake can also assist in managing the symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), another condition that Doxazosin is used for.
