• Decitabine is available for use via the intravenous route in the form of a sterile lyophilised powder for injection.

Age and Dose Restrictions

• Decitabine is intended for use in adults, particularly those aged 65 and older who are diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) and are not candidates for standard induction chemotherapy.

Contraindications

• Decitabine is contraindicated in individuals who have known hypersensitivity to Decitabine or any component of its formulation.

Other Medications to Avoid

• Decitabine may interact with drugs that are substrates of cytidine deaminase (such as cytarabine).

• Live vaccines should be avoided during treatment due to immunosuppression.

Overdose and Missed Dose

• Overdose of Decitabine might cause severe side effects, including myelosuppression resulting in infections and bleeding. In case of a suspected overdose, consult your doctor immediately.

• If you forget a dose of Decitabine, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and adhere to your regular dosing schedule.

Management of Side Effects

• Most side effects are temporary and generally harmless and resolve when discontinuing this medicine. However, if you experience any severe side effects or worsening of any of the symptoms, please consult your doctor.

• Drinking plenty of fluids can help manage some common side effects such as nausea and constipation.

Use in Driving and Operating Machinery

• Decitabine administration may result in fatigue and weakness, which could affect your ability to drive or operate heavy machinery. Hence, it is recommended to avoid such activities after taking Decitabine.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation

• Decitabine is not recommended during pregnancy unless necessary. The drug may also pass into breast milk. Therefore, breastfeeding mothers should consult their doctor before taking Decitabine.

Caution in Other Conditions

• Patients with severe hepatic impairment should exercise caution when using Decitabine as dose adjustment may be required.

• Patients with high tumour burden should be closely monitored for the development of Tumour Lysis Syndrome (TLS) while using this medicine.
