Uses of Cefotaxime
The primary use of Cefotaxime is to manage serious infections caused by susceptible bacteria. It is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic.
Cefotaxime is also used for managing various infections including respiratory tract infections such as pneumonia, urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, bone and joint infections, gynaecological infections, bacteremia and septicemia, meningitis and other central nervous system infections, intra-abdominal infections like peritonitis and genital infections including gonorrhoea. It is also used for surgical prophylaxis to prevent post-operative infections.

How Cefotaxime works
Cefotaxime is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic.
It works by inhibiting the formation of bacterial cell walls, which are crucial for the bacteria's survival. Cefotaxime does this by targeting and inactivating penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), which are required for the assembly and strength of the cell wall. The impaired cell wall leads to the breakage of bacterial cells, causing their death effectively. Hence, it manages a wide range of bacterial infections successfully.

Cefotaxime is available for reconstitution and subsequent administration via the parenteral route. It can be given via intravenously or intramuscularly (injection).
Age and Dose Restrictions
This medicine is primarily meant for adults, but can also be used in neonates, infants and children at adjusted doses depending on their weight and age.
Contraindications
Cefotaxime is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to it or other cephalosporins.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation
Cefotaxime should be used during pregnancy only if clearly necessary. It is excreted in low levels in breast milk, therefore, lactating mothers should consult their doctor before using it.
Caution in Other Conditions
Caution should be exercised in patients with renal impairment as dosage adjustment may be required. Patients with a history of colitis or seizure disorders should also exercise caution when using Cefotaxime.
