Bevacizumab is a monoclonal antibody.
It works by attaching itself to a protein called vascular endothelial growth factor or VEGF. Normally, VEGF stimulates the growth of new blood vessels, a process called angiogenesis. Tumours, which are abnormal growths of body cells, require a constant supply of nutrients and oxygen for their growth and spread. They get these from blood vessels. By binding to VEGF, Bevacizumab inhibits the formation of these new blood vessels around the tumour. Consequently, it starves the tumours of their required nutrients and oxygen, thereby slowing down their growth and spread.
