Beclometasone is used in the management of asthma in adults and children aged 5 years and above. It belongs to the corticosteroid group of medications.
Apart from this, this medicine is also used for controlling symptoms of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) when used in combination with long-acting bronchodilators. Additionally, intranasal forms can be used to manage symptoms of allergic rhinitis such as sneezing, a runny nose, and nasal congestion.
Oral thrush (yeast infection of the mouth caused by Candida)
Hoarseness (hoarse voice)
Throat irritation
Cough
Beclometasone is a glucocorticoid, a type of corticosteroid.
It works by reducing the production of inflammatory substances known as prostaglandins and leukotrienes in the body. These substances cause inflammation, swelling and narrowing of the airways. It also inhibits the movement of inflammatory cells into the airways, which further reduces inflammation and swelling. Additionally, this medicine reduces capillary permeability and mucus secretion, which helps to clear the airways and makes breathing easier.

Beclometasone is available in various inhaled formulations for use via the pulmonary route, including metered-dose inhalers (MDIs), dry powder inhalers (DPIs), nebulizer suspensions and nasal sprays.
Beclometasone is generally prescribed to adults for the management of bronchial asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It can also be prescribed to children aged 5 years and above for the management of bronchial asthma.
Beclometasone is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to it or any of the inactive ingredients present in the formulation. It is also contraindicated in patients with untreated fungal, bacterial, or tuberculous infections of the respiratory tract.
Beclometasone may interact with CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g., ritonavir, ketoconazole), oral corticosteroids (e.g., prednisolone, dexamethasone) and non-potassium sparing diuretics (e.g., furosemide, hydrochlorothiazide).
Overdose of Beclometasone may lead to excess corticosteroid effects such as suppressed adrenal function. If you suspect overdose, contact your doctor immediately.
If you miss a dose of Beclometasone, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is close to the time of your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one.
Most side effects are temporary and generally harmless and resolve when discontinuing this medicine. However, if you experience any severe side effects or worsening of any of the symptoms, please consult your doctor.
To prevent oral candidiasis (thrush), make sure to rinse your mouth with water after each inhalation of Beclometasone.
To manage hoarseness and throat irritation, consider using a spacer device with MDIs and stay well-hydrated.
Beclometasone is unlikely to have any effect on your ability to drive or operate machinery.
Beclometasone should only be used during pregnancy if the potential benefits justify the potential risks to the foetus. Consult your doctor before using this medication during pregnancy. It is unknown if this medicine is secreted in human milk. Exercise caution when receiving this medicine if you are breastfeeding and consult your doctor.
Patients with an active infection may need to exercise caution while taking Beclometasone as it may mask signs of infection. Also, if you had tuberculosis, cataracts (clouding of the lens of the eye) and glaucoma, inform your doctor.
