Uses of Aztreonam
The main use of Aztreonam is for managing serious bacterial infections caused by susceptible gram-negative bacteria including complicated and uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs), lower respiratory tract infections, septicemia, bacterial meningitis, skin and structure infections, intra-abdominal infections and gynecologic infections. It belongs to the group of monobactam antibiotics.

How Aztreonam works
Aztreonam is a monobactam antibiotic.
It works by inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial cell walls. This happens because Aztreonam binds to penicillin-binding proteins which are essential for bacteria to build their cell walls. When Aztreonam interferes with this process, it weakens the bacterial cell wall. This leads to a rupture or burst of the bacterial cell, which ultimately kills the bacteria. Therefore, Aztreonam plays a crucial role in fighting off serious infections caused by gram-negative bacteria which are resistant to other antibiotics.
