Age and Dose Restrictions

• This medicine is meant for adult men primarily for managing erectile dysfunction. It is also used in newborns for managing specific heart conditions.

Contraindications

• Alprostadil is contraindicated in men with hypersensitivity to any prostaglandins.

• Individuals with conditions predisposing them to priapism such as sickle cell anaemia, multiple myeloma, or leukaemia should avoid this medication.

• Men with penile implants or severe penile abnormalities are also advised against its use.

Other Medications to Avoid

• This medicine can interact with blood pressure medications (such as verapamil), blood thinners (like heparin and warfarin), other erectile dysfunction medications (including sildenafil, tadalafil, and vardenafil), and decongestants (such as pseudoephedrine).

Overdose and Missed Dose

• An overdose of Alprostadil may lead to prolonged painful erections (priapism), low blood pressure, or fainting. Immediate medical attention should be sought if these occur.

• If you miss a dose of Alprostadil, administer it as soon as you remember, but skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Do not administer two doses at one time.

Management of Side Effects

Most side effects are temporary and generally harmless and resolve when discontinuing this medicine. However, if you experience any severe side effects or worsening of any of the symptoms, please consult your doctor.

• For pain or discomfort at the administration site, it may be helpful to vary the site of application or injection with each dose.

• If experiencing dizziness or flushing, resting quietly and avoiding sudden movements can be beneficial.

• This medication can cause dizziness or hypotension, affecting your ability to drive or operate heavy machinery. If you feel dizzy or lightheaded after administration of this medicine, avoid engaging in these activities.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation

• Alprostadil is not indicated for use in women. Therefore, its safety during pregnancy and lactation has not been established; women should not use it.

Caution in Other Conditions

• Individuals with significant cardiovascular diseases such as unstable angina or severe heart failure should exercise caution when using this medication.

• Men with underlying penile conditions like Peyronie’s disease should consult their doctor due to potential complications.
