Adenosine

Uses of Adenosine

  • The primary use of Adenosine is in managing paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia (PSVT), an abnormally fast heart rhythm disorder. It belongs to the group of anti-arrhythmic medications.

  • Additionally, it also finds use during cardiac stress testing, where it helps diagnose coronary artery disease by dilating the coronary arteries and increasing the blood flow to the heart.

Side effects of Adenosine

  • Flushing

  • Chest discomfort

  • Shortness of breath (dyspnea)

  • Headache

  • Dizziness

How Adenosine works

  • Adenosine is a purine nucleoside that naturally occurs in all human cells.

  • It works by slowing down the electrical impulses that control heart rhythm, allowing the heart to return to a normal rate. Adenosine attaches itself to adenosine A1 receptors on the surface of heart muscle cells, inhibiting the activity of the AV node. This group of cells conducts electrical impulses from the atria to the ventricles.
