Cefoperazone + Tazobactam is a combination antibiotic.
Cefoperazone, a third-generation cephalosporin, works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. It attaches to and inactivates penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), which are enzymes involved in the synthesis of bacterial cell walls. It, thus, weakens the cell wall, causing the cell to break apart and die.
Tazobactam is a beta-lactamase inhibitor. Some bacteria produce beta-lactamase enzymes that can deactivate antibiotics like cefoperazone. Tazobactam prevents these enzymes from working, thus protecting cefoperazone and allowing it to kill bacteria that produce beta-lactamase.
