Liver

Liver disease includes various conditions that impair liver functions, such as blood detoxification, bile production, and nutrient and hormone management. Causes include viral infections (e.g., hepatitis), fat accumulation due to obesity or alcohol use, and chronic injury leading to cirrhosis. Autoimmune reactions and genetic conditions like hemochromatosis, which causes iron buildup, also contribute to liver disease. Types of liver disease include hepatitis, fatty liver disease, cirrhosis, and liver cancer. Symptoms often involve jaundice, fatigue, abdominal pain, and swelling. Treatment ranges from lifestyle changes and medication to, in severe cases, liver transplants. Early detection through regular checkups is essential.

Hepatic Encephalopathy

Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is a serious neurological condition that occurs due to severe liver disease, causing a buildup of toxins in the bloodstream that can lead to brain damage. It is characterised by a range of symptoms, from subtle cognitive changes to coma, and can be classified into different stages and types based on severity and underlying causes. Early diagnosis and treatment are essential to prevent permanent brain damage and improve the quality of life for those affected by HE.

While most immunocompetent adults can clear the infection spontaneously, HBV can cause both acute and chronic diseases, ranging from asymptomatic carrier states to cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. The clinical manifestations and management of HBV infection vary depending on the stage of the disease.
