Fig, popularly known as anjeer in India, is a small pear-shaped flowering plant that belongs to the mulberry family. Scientifically known as Ficus Carcia, the fruit is a native of the Middle East, Asia, and Turkey and is cultivated on a commercial basis in the U.S. and Spain. In India, it is grown in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, and Coimbatore on a commercial basis. Figs are sweet with crunchy seeds present inside them.

They can be consumed in the fresh, as well as dried state and dried ones are available throughout the year. It is also known as nature’s candy as the fruit is dense in natural sugars. It is available in a variety of colours, such as purple, red, green, and golden. Fig is known by many names in India. It is known as Atti Pazham in Tamil, Athi pallu in Telugu, Atti Pazham in Malayalam, and Gul Aur Avyui in Hindi. According to a study published in the American Journal of Nutrition, fig nutrition is immense. It has a large no. of antioxidants, polyphenols, fibre, and other essential nutrients present in it, which should be a part of your daily diet, most probably as a healthy snack.

Other benefits of anjeer include that it is a sweet, soft, and juicy fruit which can also be used as a substitute for sugar as a healthier option other than sucrose or corn syrup. It is also made into fame and halves and is also added into pies, puddings & cakes.
